A Can of Peas by Traci DePree
I just finished reading A Can of Peas a few moments ago and I had to get online and find out about the author. This was such a rich book. Rich in a wonderful heritage of characters that just simply transcended me into their lives for an hour at a time. It was just beautiful.

You know me well ... my nightstand is always piled with books I'm reading. The one book that never leaves my night stand is 10 Principles for Spiritual Parenting by Mimi Doe, with Marsha Walch, Ph.D. I'm the mother of four and refer to this often for guidance. I'm also reading Beyond Belief by Elaine Pagels and Faith Stories edited by C. Michael Curtis. The book I have on my nightstand but haven't begun is The Gospel of Mary of Magdala by Karen L. King. And for fiction, I just finished The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Occasions of Sin: A Memoir by Sandra Scofield. Raised Catholic by her convert mother in 1950s Texas and "abandoned" by her mother's death when she was 15, Scofield really gets into the way her religion mixed up sensuality and sin and spirituality, leaving her so confused after her mother's death that she was without guidelines to keep her from sad, even tragic events. You do get the idea that, 40 years later, she's "grown up" and maybe even is working her way back to God.

The Passion of Reverend Nash by Rachel Basch is about a Church of Christ woman minister whose grief over losing two babies is keeping her from being able to deal with the demands of her ministry. What I loved is the way her day to day life is interpreted through the Bible and through other religious reading; she truly lives her faith and eventually is able to find balance, even when her husband deserts her. It's not evangelical thinking; it's deeply spiritual, serious, wrenching faith.

Doubts and Loves by Richard Holloway reaches out to those people who think that Christianity has somehow "left them behind." It's contemporary without being flaky or false. I can think of friends who need a copy.

I am currently reading:
More Mystery Cats, a book of short stories
Spider's Web, a play by Agatha Christie
I will be starting And the Shofar Blew by Francine Rivers, followed by A Season of Grace by Bette Nordberg, a free book that the author sent me the other day.
